Over Aftermath - life beyond the crisis
Vier documentaires
Aftermath - life beyond the crisis bevat de volgende vier documentaires:

Aftermath of a crisis
Manuel Castells and independent thinkers of the Aftermath Network analyze the crisis
48 minutes, 2011
Right after the financial crisis happened in 2008, sociologist Manuel Castells convenes the Aftermath Network, an international group of intellectuals who will analyze the crisis as it is unfolding. They think it is not just a financial crisis, but a social crisis as well, bringing about a fundamental transformation of societies at large. For three consecutive years, the group meets in Lisbon to discuss the crisis. While banks are back in business, societies are struggling with anger, lack of trust and a budget crisis, bringing about rising unemployment and instability, leading in their turn to social protests and a widespread lack of trust in politcial parties and financial institutions. In this documentary, thinkers involved in the project present original perspectives on the aftermath of the crisis to recognize its multiple faces. With Sarah Banet-Weiser, Craig Calhoun, Joao Caraca, Gustavo Cardoso, Manuel Castells, Pekka Himanen, Terhi Rantanen, John Thompson, Michel Wieviorka and Rosalind Williams.

California dreaming
Reinventing life on the ruins of the economic crisis in Los Angeles
49 minutes, 2010
California is a strong brand, the golden state of dreams and new beginnings. But as the economic crisis hits hard, it is running out of cash. In Los Angeles, the film profiles five people who are going through a major transformation in their lives during the crisis. People who have been directly affected by rising unemployment and California’s strangling budget cuts, tell stories of the disillusionment they have been confronted with while trying to survive. Justin and Christine Morehouse have lost their jobs and are now living in a van with their two young sons. Charles has finally gotten out of prison after fourteen years. But among the out-of-work and out-of-luck are plenty of uplifting voices, like Homeboy Industry's gang-diversion master Father Greg Boyle and the resourceful collective Fallen Fruit. Architect Laura has taken advantage of the crisis by buying land cheaply and is starting an urban farm. An intimate portrait of the pioneers who are shaping a new America.

Another life is possible - Homage to Catalonia II
Exploring alternative economic practices in Catalonia
60 minutes, 2010
This film gives visibility to invisible economic practices, which aim to satisfy the needs and desires of people. The project looks at the construction of a sustainable, decentralized, solidarity economy that uses networks to overcome individualization and hierarchical division of work. The documentary consists of seventy interviews conducted throughout the Catalan territory and was created from fifty hours of video taped material. It captures economic practices that thousands of people in Catalonia and in the world are engaged in on a daily basis, including urban farming, housing cooperatives, ethical banking, social currency, barter networks, time banks, free education, free internet and consumer and producer cooperatives.

Time for change
The Do-It-Yourself culture as a driver of social change in the 21st century
50 minutes, 2010
Public trust in financial institutions has hit rock bottom. As commercial banks were bailed out with taxpayers’ money and continued their old vices, many people lost faith in politicians and bank managers, as well. They are angry at a speculative financial system that brings extreme wealth to a few, and instability and unemployment to many. But where does this anger lead to social change? Can we imagine viable alternatives? In a road-movie driven by the question ‘Where is the anger?’ we meet philosopher Peter Sloterdijk and the new changemakers of the self-reliant culture in Barcelona, Tallinn and Jakarta. Enric Duran, Birgit Tollman, and Zaim Saidi are modern day ‘revolutionaries’ who do not wait for political parties or institutions to change their world. They simply do it themselves by creating new local currencies, working in social networks, or robbing the banks and redistributing the money.
